The Fertility Journey Continues for Kirstie & Chris

Many Fertility Road’s readers will be acquainted with Kirstie and Chris’ Fertility Journey to date. Diagnosed with premature ovarian failure in her teens, and now in her 20’s Kirstie was Fertility Road’s youngest Journey participant. We have been following the couple’s journey which has taken them from Northern Ireland to Spain via the Greek Isles.

Enrique graduated from the University of Jaén and started his career in assisted reproduction at Clínica Vistahermosa in Alicante (2006), in collaboration with the Alfonso X el Sabio University. Ovobank, the first egg bank in Europe have recently launched ‘Ovomatch®’, an app based facial recognition system which uses a mathematical algorithm to search its donor database to match recipient and donor. The recipient uses the app to outline their physical characteristics and then with the help of a ‘selfie’ she is able to find out how many donors in the database there are with similar facial features.

As the author herself rightly states at the beginning of this diary-based account of her fertility struggle and subsequent pregnancy, and subsequent birth, it is ‘not the most dramatic or remarkable’ story. It is however one, that many can empathise with and although not all of us can claim to have won the fertility battle the story does provide hope and represents an honest account of a period which is fraught with fear, frustration, anxiety, excitement (and for Sam Osborn), ultimately happiness.

It started a much needed discussion but, fell short of educating patients on what is clinical evidence. In science, every proposed idea or pioneering intervention is supported by scientific research before it can be used with patients.
